How to Apply for Royal Oak, Michigan Water Rebates

Check the eligibility area first. Rain gardens are $6 per sq ft and must be 75% Michigan-native plants. Submit the rain garden design to rainsmart@oakgov.com for approval before installing. Total cap is $2,000 per property.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Confirm eligibility and apply

Check that your property is in the RainSmart eligibility area, then apply and pay the $25 site assessment fee.

    Open the RainSmart page
  2. 2

    Complete the site visit

Staff from the Clinton River Watershed Council or Friends of the Rouge visit your property to figure out which practice fits best.

  3. 3

Get your rain garden design approved

Submit your rain garden plan to rainsmart@oakgov.com for approval before installing. The design has to use at least 75% Michigan-native plants.

  4. 4

Install and submit for the rebate

Install the rain garden, rain barrels, or trees, then submit documentation to receive $6 per square foot, $125 per barrel, and $250 per tree, up to $2,000 per property.

The design approval step and the 75% native requirement are where rain gardens stall. Get the plan signed off before you dig, and apply early since the pilot is first-come, first-served.
