Before you go
- Take a list. Browse native plants by region and write down the species you want, with scientific names. Common names vary between nurseries.
- Check whether your city pays for the swap. Our rebate directory lists turf-replacement and native-planting programs by state.
- Ask what the plant was grown in. Locally grown stock in local soil transplants better than a plant trucked in from another climate.
- Buy small. One-gallon natives usually catch up to five-gallon ones inside a season and cost a fraction as much.
