Black cohosh is a tall native perennial that produces dramatic white bottlebrush-like flower spikes in summer. This shade-loving plant forms clumps of large, deeply divided leaves and can reach up to 6 feet tall when in bloom.

In an HOA neighborhood

Black Cohosh is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: foundation, mid zone, backyard only.

  • Very tall height may appear overgrown
  • Dies back completely in winter

Wildlife value

The fragrant white flowers attract bees and beetles during summer months. The tall flower spikes provide excellent nectar sources for pollinators in shaded garden areas.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
