Native to

RI

Showy orchid is a delicate native wildflower that produces stunning pink and white hooded blooms in spring. This small woodland perennial grows from underground tubers and typically has two broad basal leaves that emerge before the flowering stalk.

In an HOA neighborhood

Showy Orchid takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Completely disappears underground for most of the growing season
  • Very small size makes it nearly invisible in landscape
  • Requires specific woodland conditions that may conflict with typical lawn maintenance

Wildlife value

This orchid attracts specialized native bees and other small pollinators during its brief but showy bloom period in April and May.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
