Utah Water Rebates

Salt Lake City, Utah Water Rebates

The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District (JVWCD) covers most of Salt Lake County and runs the Localscapes Rewards lawn replacement rebate. It pays $3 per square foot to convert living lawn to water-efficient landscaping, with a 200-square-foot minimum. The lawn has to be currently irrigated by overhead spray, and a technician verifies it on site before approval. Applications go through utahwatersavers.com, and the converted area has to follow Localscapes planting standards: perennials and shrubs, mulch, and drip irrigation.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you are in the JVWCD service area and have at least 200 sq ft of qualifying lawn
  2. Register on utahwatersavers.com, add your property, and submit before photos plus a landscape design
  3. Schedule and pass the initial site visit before removing any grass
  4. Convert the area with perennials and shrubs, mulch, and drip irrigation per Localscapes standards
  5. Pass the final inspection, sign the agreement and W-9, and receive $3 per sq ft

What you'll need

  • Proof of JVWCD service-area residency
  • Before photos of the living, spray-irrigated lawn
  • Landscape design or drawing of the project area
  • After photos and itemized receipts
  • Signed program agreement and IRS W-9

Pollinator Patch can help: It picks Salt Lake Valley natives that meet the 50% perennial-and-shrub coverage rule, designs an HOA-friendly Localscapes-style layout with drip zones, and assembles your before-photo and design packet for the site visit.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Don't remove your lawn before the initial site visit. The technician has to verify living, spray-irrigated grass first.
  • Don't install artificial turf, water features, micro-sprays, bubblers, or soaker hoses. None of them qualify.
  • Don't drop below 50% perennial and shrub coverage at maturity or skip the 3 to 4 inches of mulch.

Salt Lake City Water Rebate FAQs

How much does Jordan Valley pay to remove a lawn?
$3 per square foot to replace lawn with water-efficient landscaping, with a 200-square-foot minimum, plus $1 per square foot for a Switch to Drip conversion (Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Localscapes Rewards, verified June 2026).
Can I remove my lawn first and apply later?
No. The lawn must be living, maintained, and currently irrigated by overhead spray, and a technician verifies it on site before approval. Removing it first disqualifies the project.
Does artificial turf qualify?
No. Artificial turf, water features, and impervious hardscapes do not qualify. The converted area must use living perennials and shrubs at 50% coverage with drip irrigation.
What is the minimum project size?
The minimum project area is 200 square feet for the lawn replacement rebate. The Switch to Drip incentive has no minimum when combined with a lawn replacement.
