Maryland Water Rebates

College Park, Maryland Water Rebates

Prince George's County partners with the Chesapeake Bay Trust on the Rain Check Rebate Program, which pays homeowners to install practices that improve stormwater runoff. Conservation landscaping that replaces turf or invasive plants with native species earns $5 per square foot, and native-planted rain gardens earn $10 per square foot, up to a $5,000 maximum. The program also covers rain barrels, cisterns, urban tree canopy, pavement removal, permeable pavement, and green roofs. Every project needs pre-approval from the Chesapeake Bay Trust before you install.

Up to $5,000

How to apply

  1. Confirm you own property in Prince George's County, excluding the City of Bowie
  2. Apply through the Chesapeake Bay Trust and choose your practice, such as conservation landscaping or a rain garden
  3. Get pre-approval from the Chesapeake Bay Trust before installing
  4. Install with native plants and meet the minimum size for your practice
  5. Pass the post-installation inspection within 12 months and submit receipts to receive the rebate

What you'll need

  • Rain Check Rebate application
  • Property ownership records
  • Pre-approval confirmation from the Chesapeake Bay Trust
  • Native plant list and planting plan
  • Itemized receipts and after photos for inspection

Pollinator Patch can help: It picks Prince George's County natives for a conservation landscape or rain garden that meets the minimum size, lays out an HOA-friendly design, and assembles the plant list and photo packet for your Chesapeake Bay Trust application.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Don't install before the Chesapeake Bay Trust pre-approves the project. Pre-approval is required to qualify.
  • Don't undersize the practice. Conservation landscaping needs at least 250 sq ft and a rain garden at least 100 sq ft.
  • Don't apply if your property is in the City of Bowie, which manages its stormwater program independently.
