How to Get the Pollinator Habitat Cost-Share Program

What you get
The Richland County Soil Conservation District cost-shares 60 percent of actual cost for pollinator habitat plantings, capped by site size: up to $250 for a small site of 8 to 1,000 square feet, $500 for a medium site under an acre, and $1,000 for a large site over an acre. The 8 square foot floor is real, so an ordinary front-yard bed qualifies at the small tier. Choose one covered planting type per application: Native Pocket Planting, Pollinator Beneficial Trees and Shrubs, Pollinator Meadow, or Community Orchard. Cost share applies to site preparation, seed or tree costs. Receipts and seed tags are required for payment along with photos of the process and the finished planting, and one payment is issued at approved project completion. Seed may be sourced through the district; buying your own requires receipts and an approved vendor list (Richland County SCD, Pollinator Habitat Application; last verified August 2026).

- Live in Richland County, North Dakota, or plant on land you own there
- Choose one covered planting type: Native Pocket Planting, Pollinator Beneficial Trees and/or Shrubs, Pollinator Meadow, or Community Orchard
- Cost share covers site preparation, seed or tree costs at 60% of actual cost
- Receipts and seed tags required for payment
- Photos of the process and the finished planting required
- Self-purchased seed or plants must come from the district approved vendor list
Before you start
Do not remove turf or begin work before you have written approval. This program requires pre-approval. Starting early can disqualify the project even if everything else is correct.
Application window: No deadline published. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
The Community Orchard option is a pollinator planting of fruit trees, shrubs, and flowers, not a general food garden grant.
