Marsh cinquefoil is a low-growing perennial with distinctive five-petaled flowers that bloom from June through August. This native plant thrives in consistently moist conditions and partial shade, making it ideal for wet areas where other plants struggle. It spreads gradually to form attractive groundcover patches.

In an HOA neighborhood

Marsh Cinquefoil takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires consistently wet soil which may look unkempt
  • Spreading habit can appear uncontrolled
  • May go dormant and look bare in winter

Wildlife value

The summer flowers provide nectar for bees and flies during the growing season. Its low, spreading habit can also offer shelter for small beneficial insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
