Utah Water Rebates

Salt Lake City, Utah Water Rebates

Salt Lake City residents access the Utah Division of Water Resources Landscape Incentive Program, which pays $2 per square foot for replacing qualifying lawn with water-wise landscaping. The minimum project size is 200 square feet and multiple areas can be combined to meet the minimum. The maximum rebate is $50,000 per application. Pre-approval is required before removing or killing any grass — projects started without approval are ineligible. Applications and eligibility confirmation are processed through utahwatersavers.com.

How to apply

  1. Create an account and submit an application at utahwatersavers.com before starting. Go to utahwatersavers.com and create an account. Select the Utah Division of Water Resources Landscape Incentive Program for Salt Lake City. Complete the application with your property address, planned conversion square footage, and proposed plant list. Do not remove or kill any lawn until you receive written pre-approval.
  2. Schedule and complete the pre-conversion site visit. After submitting the application, a program representative will contact you to schedule a pre-conversion site visit. The inspector will confirm the existing lawn area, measure the planned conversion zone, and verify the lawn is living and well-maintained. Written approval follows the visit.
  3. Convert the lawn and install water-wise landscaping. After receiving written pre-approval, remove the qualifying lawn and install drought-tolerant plants, drip irrigation, and mulch per your approved plan. Photograph the area before and after. Keep all receipts for plants, materials, and contractor work.
  4. Request a post-conversion inspection and receive your rebate. Contact the program through utahwatersavers.com to schedule the post-conversion inspection. The inspector will measure the converted area, verify plant coverage and species, and confirm drip irrigation if applicable. After the inspection passes, the $2/sq ft rebate is processed.

Salt Lake City Water Rebate FAQs

Can I combine multiple small lawn areas to meet the 200 square foot minimum?
Yes. Multiple non-contiguous lawn areas on the same property can be combined to meet the 200 square foot minimum. Each area must be included in the initial application and approved during the pre-conversion site visit.
Does artificial turf qualify as a water-wise replacement?
No. Artificial turf does not qualify as a water-efficient landscaping replacement under the Utah Division of Water Resources program. Qualifying replacements include drought-tolerant plants, wood chip or bark mulch, decomposed granite, and permeable paving.
Is there a bonus rebate for switching to drip irrigation?
Some participating water districts layer a drip irrigation conversion bonus on top of the base $2/sq ft rebate. Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, for example, adds $1/sq ft for switching overhead sprinklers to drip. Check utahwatersavers.com for the specific bonus available in your district.
