What the stated caps add up to in Austin

Common steps for every program in this guide

  1. Confirm you're an Austin Water customer. Rebates are for Austin Water residential customers. LCRA customers in the Austin area may have additional options.
  2. Get pre-approval where required. WaterWise landscaping and rainwater systems over 500 gallons need pre-approval before you start.
  3. Complete your project and keep receipts. Save itemized receipts and before/after photos.
  4. Submit via Austin Water online portal. Apply at austintexas.gov. Contact watercon@austintexas.gov or 512-974-2199 for paper or Spanish applications.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you are an Austin Water residential customer
  2. Apply online for pre-approval through the Austin Water rebate portalYour existing lawn must be at least 75% healthy grass before conversion.
  3. After approval, convert turf to native or drought-tolerant plantsPlan installs for spring (March to May) or fall (September to November).
  4. Submit your claim with receipts and after photos

Austin Water Rebate FAQs

Can I stack Austin and LCRA rebates?
Generally no, because the two programs follow your water provider rather than your address. LCRA states that its WaterSmart rebates are for LCRA domestic use customers or residents served by an LCRA water customer utility, and directs City of Austin customers to Austin Water instead (LCRA WaterSmart rebates page, last verified August 2026). If Austin Water is your provider, apply through Austin Water and stack its own programs with each other. If a different Austin-area utility supplies your water, check whether it is an LCRA customer utility.
Does my HOA affect rebate eligibility?
No. Rebates come from Austin Water. Texas law also protects rainwater harvesting and water-efficient irrigation from HOA prohibition.
When is the best time to apply?
Apply for pre-approval before starting work. WaterWise and rainwater rebates require approval first. Irrigation rebates typically do not.
