European hornbeam is a medium to large deciduous tree with a dense, oval crown and smooth gray bark. It produces small flowers in spring and develops attractive fall color, making it an excellent shade tree for larger landscapes. This adaptable tree tolerates urban conditions well and can be pruned to maintain size.

In an HOA neighborhood

European Hornbeam is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: moderate. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, street edge, mid zone.

  • Large mature size may require regular pruning in smaller spaces

Wildlife value

The spring flowers attract bees and beetles for pollination. The dense branching structure provides good nesting sites for birds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
