Giant airplant is an epiphytic bromeliad that grows naturally on trees and can be mounted on bark or grown in containers. This striking native produces tall spikes of bright red and purple flowers in late spring and summer. It requires minimal care once established and adds tropical flair to shaded garden areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Giant Airplant takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Unusual growth habit may appear unkempt to HOAs
  • Requires mounting on trees or special display methods
  • Not typical landscaping plant appearance

Wildlife value

The tubular flowers are specifically adapted to attract hummingbirds, providing an important nectar source during summer months.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
