Gulf Muhly is a perennial grass native to Gulf Coast Prairie, South Texas Plains, Blackland Prairie, Post Oak Savannah. It grows best in full sun with low water needs.

Gulf Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) earns its place in any Texas garden for one reason: the October-November bloom. Dense pink-to-magenta plumes rise 2-3 feet above the fine-textured foliage, catching backlight and creating a haze of color that is visible from the street. No other native grass in the South matches that fall display.

Gulf Muhly is not on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center toxic plant list for dogs or cats. The plant forms a tidy clump 2-3 feet tall and wide, stays upright without staking, and keeps its fine green foliage from spring through summer. For HOA front yards, it is one of the easiest choices: no one mistakes it for a weed, and it requires almost no attention.

Ecoregion notes for Texas. In the Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes (Houston, Corpus Christi, humid coastal plains): native and at its best. Full sun, any soil, minimal water once established. In the Post Oak Savannah and Blackland Prairie (DFW, Austin, San Antonio, clay soils): performs well and is widely planted in commercial and residential landscapes; divide clumps every 3-4 years when the center goes bare. In the South Texas Plains (Brush Country, drier and sandier): native; tolerates more drought than most grasses. In the Edwards Plateau: not native but adapts to the alkaline soil; plant in well-drained spots.

Gulf Muhly pairs with Gregg's Mistflower and Plateau Goldeneye for a fall pollinator garden that looks great from the street. Cut clumps to 4-6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. Divide crowded clumps in early spring. For HOA contexts, a mass planting of 3-5 clumps reads better than a single specimen.
