Resurrection fern is a unique epiphytic fern that naturally grows on tree bark and rock surfaces. It gets its name from its ability to curl up and appear dead during dry periods, then quickly revive and turn green when moisture returns. This small, delicate fern forms attractive colonies with fine-textured fronds.

In an HOA neighborhood

Resurrection Fern takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Appears dead and brown during dry periods
  • Grows in irregular, unpredictable patterns
  • Too unconventional for typical landscaping expectations

Wildlife value

Resurrection fern provides shelter and nesting material for small wildlife and insects. As a non-flowering plant, it doesn't support pollinators directly but contributes to ecosystem diversity.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
