Stream bogmoss is a small aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial that forms low mats of fine, needle-like foliage. This native wetland plant produces tiny white flowers during summer months and thrives in consistently moist to wet soils. It works well as groundcover in bog gardens, rain gardens, or along pond edges.

In an HOA neighborhood

Stream Bogmoss takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires specialized wet conditions that are uncommon in typical landscapes
  • Very small size and moss-like appearance may look unkempt to HOA boards
  • Limited to bog or water garden applications

Wildlife value

While specific pollinator data is limited, the small summer flowers likely attract tiny beneficial insects and flies. The dense mat-forming growth provides habitat for small amphibians and moisture-loving invertebrates in wetland settings.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
