Tartar maple is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree with an attractive rounded crown and smooth bark. It produces clusters of small yellowish flowers in late spring, followed by distinctive winged seeds. This adaptable tree tolerates various soil conditions and provides good fall color.

In an HOA neighborhood

Tartar Maple takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Non-native species may not align with HOA native landscaping requirements
  • Large mature size may conflict with utility lines and spacing requirements
  • Less familiar ornamental tree may be questioned by conservative HOA boards

Wildlife value

The spring flowers attract bees and beetles for pollination. The seeds provide food for birds and small mammals.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
