Potentilla villosa is a low-growing native wildflower that forms compact mats of small, silvery-green leaves. It produces cheerful yellow flowers throughout the summer months and thrives in sunny, dry conditions with minimal water once established.

In an HOA neighborhood

Villous Cinquefoil takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very small stature may appear sparse in formal landscapes
  • Unknown dormancy appearance could look untidy
  • May be perceived as too wild or weedy for front yard use

Wildlife value

This plant attracts native bees and beneficial beetles during its long summer bloom period. Its low growth habit provides ground-level habitat for small beneficial insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
