Northwestern Forested Mountains
Northwestern Forested Mountains covers the high country of the West: the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada, the Northern and Southern Rockies, and the ranges between them. Elevation matters more than latitude here, so conditions shift quickly over short distances, with snow-fed springs and dry summers. Natives such as red flowering currant, showy milkweed, and Rocky Mountain penstemon are adapted to that pattern and to soils that are usually thin and fast-draining.
