Alpine foxtail is a compact native grass that forms small, neat clumps with fine-textured foliage. This high-altitude species produces delicate flower spikes during summer months and stays quite short, making it suitable for rock gardens or as an accent plant.

In an HOA neighborhood

Alpine Foxtail takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very small size makes it appear insignificant in typical landscaping
  • Alpine specialist may struggle at lower elevations
  • Limited availability makes replacement difficult

Wildlife value

This grass provides nectar for bees during its summer blooming period. Its small stature limits its overall wildlife impact compared to larger native grasses.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
