Balloonvine is a fast-growing annual vine that produces distinctive inflated seed pods resembling small balloons. It climbs by tendrils and bears small white flowers in summer, followed by the papery, three-chambered fruits that give it its name. This tropical vine can quickly cover fences, trellises, or other structures during the growing season.

In an HOA neighborhood

Balloonvine takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Can appear weedy and uncontrolled
  • Aggressive self-seeding may be considered invasive-looking
  • Vine growth habit may look unkempt without constant management

Wildlife value

The small white flowers attract bees and flies during the summer blooming period. Birds may eat the black seeds contained within the balloon-like pods.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
