Two-row barley is an annual cereal grain that grows in upright clumps with distinctive seed heads. This agricultural crop produces tall, sturdy stems topped with compact grain spikes from late spring through summer.

In an HOA neighborhood

Barley takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Looks like agricultural crop rather than ornamental landscaping
  • Becomes brown and weedy-looking as it matures
  • May be perceived as inappropriate for residential settings

Wildlife value

Provides seeds for birds and small mammals when allowed to mature. The grain heads attract various seed-eating wildlife species in late summer.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
