Brassica kaber, commonly known as wild mustard or charlock, is an annual wildflower that grows 1-3 feet tall with bright yellow flowers. It blooms from May through July and thrives in full sun with minimal water once established. This plant readily self-seeds and can spread quickly in favorable conditions.

In an HOA neighborhood

Canola takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Considered a weedy species that can spread aggressively
  • May be classified as a noxious weed in some areas
  • Informal appearance doesn't match typical landscaping expectations

Wildlife value

The bright yellow flowers attract bees and beetles during the spring and summer months. Seeds provide food for birds later in the season.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
