Couch panicum is a native perennial grass that forms spreading clumps 1-4 feet tall. It produces delicate seed heads from summer through fall and tolerates various soil conditions in full sun. This grass spreads by underground rhizomes and can be aggressive in favorable conditions.

In an HOA neighborhood

Couch Panicum takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Spreads aggressively by rhizomes
  • Can appear weedy and unkempt
  • May be considered invasive in maintained landscapes

Wildlife value

The seed heads provide food for birds and small mammals. As a native grass, it offers nesting material and habitat for various wildlife species.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
