Alyssum turkestanicum is a low-growing perennial forb that forms compact mats 2-8 inches tall and up to 12 inches wide. It produces clusters of small flowers from May through July and thrives in full sun with minimal water requirements. This drought-tolerant plant works well as groundcover in rock gardens or xeric landscapes.
In an HOA neighborhood
Desert Alyssum takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.
Works well in: backyard only.
- Very small stature may appear sparse in formal settings
- Unknown leaf retention could create untidy appearance when dormant
- May be perceived as weedy rather than intentionally planted
Wildlife value
This plant provides nectar for bees and beetles during its spring and early summer blooming period. Its compact flowering clusters offer accessible food sources for small pollinators.
Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
