Erythronium californicum is a charming woodland perennial with nodding lily-like white flowers that bloom in spring. The mottled green and brown leaves emerge before the flowers and create an attractive groundcover. This native bulb goes dormant in summer after blooming.

In an HOA neighborhood

Fawn-lily is an HOA-friendly choice in the right placement. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 2 out of 5.

Works well in: mid zone, backyard only.

  • Goes completely dormant in summer leaving bare spots
  • Best in woodland settings rather than formal landscaping
  • Limited visual impact as an individual specimen

Wildlife value

Fawn lilies provide early spring nectar for native bees and beetles. Their seeds are dispersed by ants, contributing to woodland ecology.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
