Field burweed is a low-growing annual that forms small mats close to the ground. It produces tiny greenish flowers in spring and develops spiny burs that can be problematic for bare feet and pets.

In an HOA neighborhood

Field Burweed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Produces painful spiny burrs
  • Considered a weed by most homeowners
  • Can spread aggressively in turf areas

Wildlife value

This plant has minimal wildlife value as it produces wind-pollinated flowers rather than attracting beneficial insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
