Wild columbine is a charming native perennial with distinctive red and yellow nodding flowers that bloom from April through June. This compact plant forms neat clumps of delicate, blue-green foliage that works well in partially shaded garden areas. The plant goes dormant in winter, leaving behind attractive seed pods if not cut back.

In an HOA neighborhood

Wild Columbine is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, mid zone.

  • May self-seed moderately in favorable conditions

Wildlife value

Host plant for columbine duskywing moth.

The tubular flowers are specifically adapted to attract hummingbirds with their red color and shape, while also providing nectar for native bees. Seeds are eaten by various songbirds and small mammals.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
