Kochia scoparia, commonly called burning bush or summer cypress, is an annual plant that forms dense, rounded bushes with fine-textured foliage. It turns brilliant red in fall, creating striking seasonal color. The plant self-seeds readily and can become weedy if not managed.
In an HOA neighborhood
Burningbush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.
Works well in: backyard only.
- Considered invasive and prohibited in many areas
- Can self-seed aggressively and spread
- May be classified as a noxious weed
Wildlife value
Provides nectar for bees and beetles during its summer bloom period. The dense growth habit offers some shelter for small wildlife.
Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
