Jumpseed is a native perennial wildflower that forms compact clumps with small white flowers on slender spikes from summer through early fall. The plant gets its name from seeds that literally jump from the plant when ripe, helping it spread naturally through the garden.

In an HOA neighborhood

Jumpseed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Informal woodland appearance may look untidy
  • Can appear weedy to those unfamiliar with native plants
  • Dies back completely in winter leaving bare spots

Wildlife value

The small white flowers attract native bees and beetles during its long summer blooming period. The seeds provide food for birds and small mammals.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
