American dune grass is a native coastal grass that forms upright clumps with blue-green foliage and attractive seed heads in summer. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in sandy soils and windy conditions, making it excellent for challenging sites. It provides year-round structure and movement in the landscape.

In an HOA neighborhood

American Dune Grass is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: mid zone, street edge, backyard only.

  • May spread aggressively in ideal conditions
  • Can look somewhat wild or unkempt to traditional tastes

Wildlife value

The seed heads provide food for songbirds and small mammals in late summer and fall. As a native grass, it offers nesting material and habitat for beneficial insects.
