Common chickweed is a low-growing annual herb that forms small mats with tiny white star-shaped flowers. It blooms from early spring through late summer and prefers partially shaded areas with consistent moisture. This plant spreads readily and often appears in disturbed soils and garden beds.

In an HOA neighborhood

Common Chickweed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Considered a common weed by most homeowners
  • Spreads aggressively and can appear unkempt
  • May be mistaken for neglected lawn maintenance

Wildlife value

The small flowers attract bees and flies during its extended blooming period. Seeds provide food for birds, particularly finches and sparrows.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
