beetles, flies

Fraser's magnolia is a medium-sized native tree with large, tropical-looking leaves and fragrant creamy white flowers in late spring. This understory tree prefers partial shade and develops an open, somewhat irregular crown as it matures.

In an HOA neighborhood

Fraser's Magnolia is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: moderate. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: backyard only, mid zone.

  • Large leaves can appear messy when they drop
  • Irregular growth habit may look unkempt to some HOAs
  • Significant mature size requires adequate space

Wildlife value

The large flowers attract beetles and flies for pollination in May and June. The tree also provides nesting sites for birds and its seeds feed various wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
