Pelotazo is a drought-tolerant native shrub that produces small orange or yellow cup-shaped flowers throughout the summer months. This compact plant maintains a rounded form and thrives in hot, dry conditions with minimal care once established.

In an HOA neighborhood

Pelotazo takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Can appear scraggly and informal
  • May look sparse when dormant
  • Flowers and growth habit too wild for most HOA standards

Wildlife value

The abundant summer blooms attract bees and butterflies, providing nectar from May through August. This native plant supports local pollinator populations during peak summer heat when many other flowers fade.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
