Tanoak is a large evergreen tree native to western forests. It produces fragrant white flower clusters in late spring and early summer, followed by acorns that mature over two years. This substantial tree provides year-round structure and screening with its dense, dark green foliage.

In an HOA neighborhood

Tanoak takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Extremely large mature size (15-50 feet tall and wide)
  • Drops acorns and leaves requiring cleanup
  • May be considered too wild or rustic for formal landscapes

Wildlife value

The spring flowers attract bees and beetles for pollination services. The acorns are an important food source for wildlife including birds, squirrels, and deer.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
