Arizona brome is a native annual grass that grows in upright clumps reaching up to 3 feet tall. It produces delicate seed heads in spring and early summer before going dormant in the heat. This drought-tolerant grass provides natural movement and texture to grassland landscapes.

In an HOA neighborhood

Arizona Brome takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Dies back completely as annual, leaving bare spots
  • Can appear weedy or unkempt
  • Seed heads may be seen as messy

Wildlife value

The grass supports bees and beetles during its spring blooming period. Seeds provide food for birds and small mammals.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
