A low-growing evergreen shrub with holly-like compound leaves and bright yellow flower clusters in spring. The flowers develop into blue-black berries that attract birds, while the foliage provides year-round structure and interest.

In an HOA neighborhood

Cascade Barberry takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Spiny foliage could be considered hazardous near walkways

Wildlife value

Spring flowers provide nectar for bees and beetles during early season when few other plants are blooming. The berries feed birds and small mammals throughout summer and fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
