bees, beetles

Hepatica is a small woodland perennial with three-lobed evergreen leaves and delicate spring flowers in white, pink, or blue. This low-growing ground cover thrives in shaded areas and provides early season color when few other plants are blooming.

In an HOA neighborhood

Hepatica takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

Wildlife value

The early spring flowers provide nectar for bees and beetles when few other food sources are available. Its small stature makes it less significant for larger wildlife but valuable for early pollinators.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
