Phantom orchid is a rare white saprophytic orchid that lacks chlorophyll and depends on soil fungi for nutrients. This delicate woodland species produces ghostly white flower spikes in late spring to summer and is extremely difficult to cultivate in typical garden settings.

In an HOA neighborhood

Phantom Orchid takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Extremely rare and protected species
  • Nearly impossible to establish or maintain
  • May disappear unpredictably for years

Wildlife value

While native, this orchid has specialized pollination requirements and provides limited wildlife value in residential landscapes due to its rarity and specific habitat needs.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
