Wood grass is a tall native bunch grass that forms attractive clumps with feathery golden seed heads in late summer. It provides excellent texture and movement in the landscape while requiring minimal care once established. The grass turns warm bronze colors in fall before going dormant in winter.

In an HOA neighborhood

Wood Grass is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: mid zone, street edge, backyard only.

  • Can look messy when dormant in winter
  • May be too tall and informal for some conservative HOAs

Wildlife value

This native grass attracts bees and beetles with its late summer blooms and provides seeds for birds. The dense clumps offer nesting sites and shelter for small wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
