Slender clubmoss is a low-growing, evergreen groundcover that spreads by underground runners to form dense mats. This native plant produces delicate, upright stems with small, scale-like leaves and creates a soft, moss-like carpet appearance. It thrives in partial shade and works well as an understory groundcover in woodland gardens.

In an HOA neighborhood

Carolina Clubmoss takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very wild, moss-like appearance may look unkempt to neighbors
  • Low growth habit can appear weedy or neglected
  • Uncommon plant that many won't recognize as intentional landscaping

Wildlife value

While not a major pollinator plant, slender clubmoss provides habitat and cover for small woodland creatures and insects. Its dense mat structure offers shelter for ground-dwelling invertebrates.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
