Plains blackberry is a medium-sized native shrub that produces white flowers in late spring through summer, followed by edible dark berries. This thorny shrub forms dense colonies and provides excellent wildlife habitat while offering homeowners a natural food source.

In an HOA neighborhood

Plains Blackberry takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Thorny canes may be considered unsafe near walkways
  • Can spread by underground runners
  • May appear unkempt during winter dormancy

Wildlife value

The flowers attract bees and beetles during the long blooming period from May through July. Birds and small mammals feed on the berries, while the dense growth provides nesting sites and cover.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
