Running mountaingrass is a low-growing native perennial that forms spreading clumps in shaded areas. This woodland grass produces delicate flower spikes in summer and works well as a groundcover under trees or in naturalized areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Running Mountaingrass takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Running growth habit may appear uncontrolled
  • Low height can look unkempt in formal settings
  • May spread beyond intended boundaries

Wildlife value

While pollinator support is limited, this grass provides habitat and potential food sources for ground-dwelling wildlife and small birds that may feed on its seeds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
