Western sedge is a clumping native grass that forms neat tufts of narrow green foliage. It produces small, inconspicuous flower spikes in late spring through summer and tolerates partial shade conditions well.

In an HOA neighborhood

Western Sedge is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, street edge, mid zone.

Wildlife value

This sedge provides nesting material and seeds for birds, while its clumping structure offers shelter for small wildlife. The seeds are particularly valuable for ground-feeding songbirds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
