Western maidenhair fern is a delicate native fern with distinctive fan-shaped leaflets on thin, dark stems. It thrives in shaded, moist areas and provides elegant texture to woodland gardens. This evergreen fern maintains its graceful appearance year-round in protected locations.

In an HOA neighborhood

Aleutian Maidenhair takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Delicate appearance may look unkempt to traditional landscaping preferences
  • Requires specific moisture conditions that can be challenging to maintain
  • May die back in harsh winter conditions despite being evergreen

Wildlife value

As a fern, it does not attract pollinators but provides shelter and nesting material for small wildlife. The dense fronds offer cover for ground-dwelling insects and small creatures.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
