Alpine pondweed is an aquatic perennial that grows submerged or floating in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. This native water plant produces small spikes of inconspicuous flowers above the water surface during summer months. It requires consistently wet conditions and cannot survive in typical garden soil.
In an HOA neighborhood
Alpine Pondweed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.
- Requires permanent water feature
- Not suitable for typical residential landscaping
- May appear unkempt to neighbors unfamiliar with aquatic plants
Wildlife value
This aquatic plant provides habitat for waterfowl and supports aquatic insects. It offers cover and food sources for fish and other pond wildlife.
Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
