Gattinger's panicgrass is a native grass that forms neat, upright clumps reaching 1 to 3 feet tall. It produces delicate seed heads from summer through fall and thrives in sunny, dry conditions. This low-maintenance perennial works well as an ornamental accent grass in residential landscapes.

In an HOA neighborhood

Gattinger's Panicgrass takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • May appear too wild or unmaintained for front yard use
  • Unknown dormancy appearance could be concerning
  • Not widely recognized as ornamental grass

Wildlife value

The flowers attract bees and beetles during the long summer blooming period. Seeds provide food for birds and small wildlife in fall and winter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
