Northern bayberry is a dense, rounded shrub with aromatic evergreen foliage and small waxy gray berries on female plants. It tolerates poor soils and salt spray, making it excellent for tough growing conditions. The shrub maintains a naturally compact form without much pruning.

In an HOA neighborhood

Northern Bayberry is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, street edge, mid zone.

Wildlife value

Flowers attract bees and beetles in late spring. The waxy berries are prized by many bird species and persist through winter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
