Rough boneset is a native perennial wildflower that produces clusters of small white flowers from summer through early fall. It grows in an upright, somewhat bushy form and naturally spreads to form small colonies over time.

In an HOA neighborhood

Rough Boneset takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Has a wild, weedy appearance that most HOAs would reject
  • Can look scraggly when not in bloom
  • Name includes 'rough' which reflects its informal texture

Wildlife value

This plant is excellent for supporting native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects during its long bloom period. The flowers provide nectar while the seeds attract birds in fall and winter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
