Sessile trillium is a charming native wildflower that produces distinctive three-petaled maroon flowers in early spring. This woodland perennial forms neat clumps with attractive mottled leaves and goes dormant by midsummer. It's perfect for shaded areas where few other flowering plants will thrive.

In an HOA neighborhood

Sessile Trillium takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Disappears completely by midsummer leaving bare spots
  • Uncommon appearance may seem too wild or weedy
  • Very slow to establish and spread

Wildlife value

This spring ephemeral provides nectar and pollen for beetles during early season when few other flowers are available.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
