A slow-growing evergreen tree with a distinctive gnarled, sculptural form and bluish-green foliage. It develops an irregular, spreading canopy that gives it a rugged appearance. This drought-tolerant native thrives in harsh conditions with minimal care once established.

In an HOA neighborhood

Utah Juniper takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very large mature size may overwhelm residential lots
  • Irregular growth habit appears too wild for formal landscapes

Wildlife value

Provides shelter and nesting sites for birds, and its berries feed wildlife including birds and small mammals. The dense evergreen foliage offers year-round cover for various species.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
